She was the face of the monster supermarket chain for ten years, but actress Jane Horrocks admits she doesn’t like Tesco because it is brimming with ‘chavs.’
Most famed for her role as a dippy secretary in Jennifer Saunders hit comedy Absolutely fabulous, Jane was also the face of supermarket giant Tesco for a decade, playing the role of the long-suffering daughter of funny granny Prunella Scales.
You would assume that she loved the store she spent so many years backing, but it turns out she finds it rather ‘scary’ because of its clientele.
Opening up for the first time about her work with the company in an interview with Radio Times magazine, the AbFab star said: ‘There’s always a set type of people doing their shopping according to the time or the day, whether it’s pensioners holding everyone up or screeching kids.
‘Or sometimes you can have rather a lot of chavs in, and that gets a bit scary.’
Despite not enjoying the shopping experience Tesco offers, Jane, 47, preaches she has a lot to thank them for as it not only helped her buy her home and pay her bills, but it ensures that she never had to do ‘crap’ work.
Ms Horrocks resides in Twickenham, South West London with her long-term partner Nick Vivina and their two children 14-year-old Dylan and Molly who is 12. The family live in a house that have appropriately nick names Tesco Towers.
Jane thanks the chain for providing her with work for so long because the lucrative adverts she was hired for meant she avoided ‘sub-standard’ and ‘crap’ acting roles.
She continued: ‘Tesco commercials have given me license to avoid crap, and I’m eternally grateful to them.
‘I see friends having to do shows on television, which 10 or 15 years ago they wouldn’t have considered. Now they have to do them for financial reasons, because TV just isn’t investing in drama in the same way.’
However Jane’s favorite character to play has always been ditsy secretary Bubbles alongside close friends comedian Jennifer Saunders and actress come activist Joanna Lumley in the 90s iconic series Absolutely Fabulous.
Luckily for Jane and fans of the AbFab clan, her character is set to return to our her screens this Christmas for a special edition.
Keeping herself extra busy Jane begins filming on a brand new series ironically about a supermarket.
In her new show ‘Trollied’ which airs on Sky next week, she plays Julie an aspiring confident supermarket manager.
Jane cheerfully said: ‘I’m obsessed by the workplace in terms of comedy. I find it endlessly fascinating. There are so many nuances and petty, arbitrary hierarchies. No matter what position you’re in, everybody has somebody to look down on. I love that.’
