We might not be able to afford stunning transformation and pampering from some of the worlds most famous hairstylists including Ken Paves, Vidal Sassoon, Oscar Blandi, Rodolfo Vaentin and Jay Sebring.
But each of us can help ourselves to feel confident about our precious locks by finding out the scientific facts that lay behind so many hair myths?
Here are the scientific facts behind the top ten hair myths:
1. Cutting you hair makes it stronger and grow faster?
This is one of the oldest hair myths in circulation believed to have come from an observation surrounding male facial hair which is different to the hair on the head and has a different growth property. Cutting your hair only makes it shorter and no matter what you do hair on average grows half and inch per month.
2. Split ends can repair themselves?
Unfortunately split ends do not repair themselves and must be cut off immediately because they will only split higher and cause more damage.
3. Brushing hair is good for it?
Actually, brushing hair is extremely bad for it and the top contributor to split ends and breakage. Golden rule is to groom your hair but once it is in place, stop!
4. Wearing hats cause baldness?
This famous hair myth probably got its roots from young service men going bald or having the appearance of ‘thinning’ hair after wearing military hats but its purely coincidental. Hair loss in young men is due to ‘Dihyfrotestosterone’ Â (male sex hormone), not hats. Wearing hats contributes to some hair breakage which can lead to split ends.
5. Hair can turn grey overnight?
This famous myth was born in literature. Hair receives its colour genetically and can only turn grey or white after very long periods of time. hair does not turn grey, the hair merely loses it colour.
6. Pluck one grey hair out and two will grow back?
Absolute nonsense.
7. Baldness is inherited from the mothers side of the family?
Both male and female hair loss can be inherited from ‘either’ side of the family and can skip many generations. male hair loss usually begins at 18 yrs to 20 yrs and a females between 45yrs-55yrs.
8. Dandruff is caused from a dry scalp?
Dandruff and dry scalp are two completely different things. A good shampoo and conditioner will sort a dry scalps ‘flaking’ out, but Dandruff is a serious health issue and requires medical attention. dandruff ‘flakes’ are acutally oily and not dry, therefore very few people actually do have dandruff but would certainly know it if they did.
9. Dandruff is contagious?
Absolutely not! Everyone has the micro-organism that causes dandruff but it depends on whether it becomes active or not to get the scalp condition.
10. Cutting hair at full moon makes it grow fuller, faster or longer?
Hair will only grow fuller, faster, longer and healthier if you do not pay too much attention to washed-out myths.
