They’ve gone from helpful buddies to arch nemeses – Jessie J is set to go head to head with fellow London lass Tulisa Contostavlos after being confirmed as new pop mentor on BBC’s The Voice.
The rapidly growing popstar Jessie J has managed to squeeze the role of mentor into her already hectic star schedule and will be appearing on the X Factor’s rival talent show, The Voice, when it launches in spring.
The singing contest – which is labeled as being the BBC’s answer to the infamous X Factor series – has taken a twist on the traditional audition process.
With ITV’s singing contestants fast becoming judged on personality over vocal talent, BBC has thrown out traditional methods of noticing talent out the window.
Instead of a formal interview and singing audition in front of a room of formidable judges or a stadium full of eager fans, The Voice offers lucky hopefuls ‘blind’ auditions, so they’re judged purely on their talent.
The show rejects looking at the whole package (the contestants ‘image’ and personality) instead it purely pays attention to the voice box mamma gave them – hense the name ‘The Voice’.
‘It’s all about the voice. I love the idea of being a coach and a mentor and not a judge,’ says Jessie, 23.
‘I wanted to be involved. They approached me and I was well up for it.’
An excited Jessie is booked to be one of four celeb mentors on new show – but which position will she play… the tough Tulisa, the sweet angelic Cheryl or the formidable straight talking head judge Simon Cowell?
‘It’s not telling someone whether they’re good or not,’ she tells Newsbeat.
‘It’s helping them find their voice and who they are and making it something that they could give to the world.’
The BBC hasn’t completely gone on a wild goose chase by funding a rival talent show, The Voice has already be tried and tested in the US, where high flyers Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton all mentored.
The show was a huge success in the States so fingers cross the British version will be too.
With massive hit artist Jessie J behind the desk offering her getto advice, i’m sure it will be!
